Natural Progesterone - Medical use

In so-called academic medicine, especially in Poland, medical use of natural progesterone is practically zero. In other countries, natural micronised progesterone (USP) medical products are available in capsules, creams, gels or drops. In Poland there is not one such natural medical specific, but some synthetic forms of lutein and progesterone derivatives. Synthetic forms are the most commonly used preventive measures for the risk of miscarriage, corpus luteum insufficiency, pregnancy poisoning, menstrual disorders, contraception, and sometimes glaucoma.

However, in many countries where natural medicine is widely used and natural bio-identical progesterone has been approved for the general medical system, it is used for the treatment of:

Natural Progesterone in neurology and psychiatry.

Natural progesterone is also very widely used as a so-called neurosteroid. Steroids metabolised and directly synthesised in the nervous system from cholesterol and from steroid hormone precursors are called neurosteroids. Such neurosteroids include progesterone and 5-alpha metabolites, especially allopregnanolone. Progesterone in the nervous system regardless of origin (own, applied externally) exerts neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects. Regulates the process of cellular apoptosis. Progesterone plays an important role in the regeneration of the central and peripheral nervous system and stimulates myelination and remineralisation. It has also been shown that allopregnanolone – the metabolite of progesterone, through the effect on the GABA receptor, has an anticonvulsant, sedative and antidepressant effect.

With its remarkable properties, natural progesterone is used in medicine for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases such as:

  • Epilepsy
  • Migraine
  • Regeneration of nerve cells after brain injury, induced both mechanically and by other factors (stroke)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Sexual disorders of psychological nature
  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Manic depressive psychosis
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Parkinsonism

The anti-depressant effect of natural progesterone is similar to that of serotonin reuptake inhibitors, so it is used to treat depression with suicidal tendencies.
